Gas Dryer? Washer and Dryer Appliance Removal in Boise

A lot of people get a laundry pair ready by unplugging both machines, coiling up the water hoses and taping the dryer door shut. Then the dryer slides out and the gas line is still threaded onto the back.

That happens a lot. When people book appliance removal in Boise for a washer and dryer, they picture two big boxes and a dolly. With a gas dryer there's one extra step, and it's the one that matters most.

Here's what that step looks like, what you can safely do ahead of time, and when to leave it alone.

Gas or electric? Check before you call

Plenty of folks don't know which dryer they have. That's fine. It's quick to find out.

Pull the dryer out a few inches and look behind it. An electric dryer has a thick cord with an oversized plug. A gas dryer has a normal household plug, plus a flexible metal or yellow-coated line running to a small valve on the wall or floor.

See that line and valve? It's gas. Mention it when you call so we can bring the right cap and plan the time.

How gas dryer appliance removal in Boise actually goes

The first thing we do on site is close the shutoff valve. On most valves the handle sits crosswise to the pipe when it's off.

Then we disconnect the flex line and cap the open gas fitting so nothing's left open in your wall. We check that cap for leaks before we do anything else. It's not exciting work. It just has to be right every single time.

Next is the vent. In older homes around the North End and the Bench, we usually find foil duct that's been crushed behind the dryer for years. If it's falling apart, we'll ask whether you want it gone too.

The washer's easier. Water off, hoses off, a bucket for the water that's always hiding in them, and the drain hose out of the standpipe.

How long it takes depends on the space. Tight closets and stairs add time.

Heads up: If you ever smell gas near your dryer, before or after a removal, don't flip switches or run anything. Get everyone outside and call your gas utility from there. A capped line shouldn't leak, but your nose is still the best safety check you've got.

Should you disconnect a gas dryer yourself?

Honestly, plenty of handy people do this themselves and do it fine.

If the valve turns smoothly and you're comfortable tightening a cap and checking it with soapy water, it's not a hard job.

The trouble is old hardware. We run into valves in older Nampa and Caldwell homes that haven't been turned since they were installed, and flex lines so old the coating has cracked. Forcing a stuck valve is how a small job turns into a plumber's visit.

So here's our rule. If the valve doesn't move easily, stop. Leave it for us, and if the valve itself looks bad, we'll tell you straight that it needs a plumber first.

Before the appliance removal crew shows up

You don't have to prep anything. A few minutes on your end does make the visit quicker, though.

Empty both machines. You'd be surprised how many single socks leave the house with a dryer.

Clear the path to the door. Newer builds in Kuna and Star often have the laundry room opening onto a hallway with a rug, a shoe rack and somebody's bike. Moving those keeps us from squeezing a heavy machine around them.

In winter, think about the water. A washer that's been sitting in an unheated garage in January can have ice in the pump and hoses, and that makes draining slow and messy. Just let us know.

Replacing the pair? Tell us when the new ones are being delivered. Sometimes it works best for us to come the day before, so the space is clear and the gas line is already capped.

Where your old washer and dryer end up

We get asked this a lot, and it's a fair question.

If the machines still run, there's a good chance they get donated. A working gas dryer is worth something to a family that already has a gas hookup.

If they're done, they get recycled. Washers and dryers are mostly steel, plus motors and copper wiring that can all be reused, so very little of a laundry pair ends up at the Ada County landfill.

We price by the space your items take up and the work involved, and you get a firm price at the free on-site estimate before anything gets unhooked. The gas disconnect is part of that quote. No surprise line items, and you can pay with cash, card or Venmo.

Bottom line

A gas dryer isn't a big deal to remove. It needs the valve shut, the line capped and a leak check before it leaves the house.
