Stackable Washer and Dryer Removal: Appliance Removal in Boise
Your stacked washer and dryer sits in a closet that looks like it was built around it. The dryer's up top, the bifold doors barely clear, and if you're thinking about appliance removal in Boise, you're probably wondering how the thing got in there to begin with.
Fair question. A stacked unit in a tight laundry closet takes more thought than a side-by-side pair in a garage, and it's mostly because of the way out.
Here's what's involved, what to check ahead of time, and a few things people tend to miss.
Not every stacked setup comes apart
Before anything gets moved, it helps to know which kind you have. There are three.
The first is two separate machines held together with a stacking kit. The dryer sits on the washer, locked in by a bracket. These come apart, so they're easier to carry and easier to get around corners.
The second is a one-piece laundry center. That's usually a top-load washer on the bottom with a dryer built into the same frame above it. It doesn't come apart. It leaves as one tall, awkward piece.
The third is an all-in-one combo, where a single drum washes and dries. It looks like a regular front-loader, but it's often heavier than you'd guess.
How do you tell which one you've got? Look at the seam between top and bottom. A gap with a separate control panel on each machine usually means two units and a kit, while one continuous cabinet means a laundry center.
Washer and dryer removal in Boise closets and condos
Stacked units show up wherever space is short. Condos and townhomes in Meridian, newer builds in Kuna and Star with laundry in a hallway closet, apartments in Garden City, and older North End houses where laundry got squeezed into a spot that was never meant for it.
The machine is rarely the hard part. The path out is.
Bifold doors usually have to come off their track first. A narrow hallway with a sharp turn might mean tipping the unit and walking it around. Stairs, especially a shared condo stairwell, add time and care.
Then there's lifting the dryer off the washer. That's a reach over your head with real weight in your hands, and it's the moment most likely to hurt somebody or dent a wall.
That's why we look at the space before giving a price. Pricing is based on the space and the work involved, not a number guessed over the phone. A stacked pair in an open garage in Nampa just isn't the same job as a laundry center coming out of a second-floor closet in Eagle.
Prepping for appliance removal in Boise
You don't have to do much. A few minutes of prep still helps.
Measure the doorways and the closet opening. Laundry centers are tall, and one that went in before the trim was finished may need some careful angling to get back out.
Clear the path. Shoes, the laundry basket, that rug that slides around. Get them out of the way so nobody trips carrying something heavy.
Empty the drum. It sounds obvious. Socks still get left behind all the time.
Expect leftover water. Front-load washers hold water in the pump and drain hose even after a cycle, and tipping the machine sends it onto the floor.
Tip: The day before removal, run a quick drain or spin cycle. Then open the small filter door low on the front of the front-loader with a towel and a shallow pan underneath. You'll catch the water that would otherwise end up on your laundry room floor.
Gas lines, vents and everything behind the stack
The hookups behind a stacked unit are hard to see and harder to reach. That's where most of the care goes.
If your dryer is gas, the line needs to be shut off at the valve and capped properly. Never pull a gas dryer out and leave an open line behind it. Not sure which type you have? Look behind it for a thin flexible metal line with a valve handle nearby.
Turn the water off before the hoses come loose. Older shutoff valves sometimes don't close all the way, and it's better to find that out before a hose is disconnected.
The dryer vent is easy to forget. Once the dryer's gone, you've got an open duct in the wall, and since lint buildup is a common fire risk, it's a good chance to look inside while it's easy to reach.
One more surprise. Some newer ventless dryers use a heat pump, which means they hold refrigerant just like a fridge. Those have to be handled like a refrigerator at the end of their life, not tossed in with scrap metal.
Lining it up with your new delivery
If you're replacing a stacked set, order matters. In a tight closet there's nowhere to park the old unit, so it has to be out before the new one comes in.
A lot of people schedule removal ahead of delivery day. That gives you an empty closet, a chance to wipe the floor, and time to catch any valve or vent problems before the new machines are sitting in the hallway. Same-day service is sometimes available if you're short on time.
What happens to the old one? Working washers and dryers can often be donated. The rest usually get recycled for their metal, which beats a trip to the landfill, whether you live in Boise, Caldwell or out toward Emmett.
Before you lift that dryer yourself
Stacked laundry looks simple until you're holding a dryer over your head in a closet with no room to step back. Know which kind you have, drain the washer, shut off the gas and water, and clear a path.
