Freezer Removal in Star
Fast, professional freezer removal for Star homes and businesses.
Delivering fresh starts since 2022
Star is growing faster than almost anywhere else in Idaho, and a lot of that growth means freezers moving in, out, or into the garage as a second unit. Whether you're clearing out a chest freezer in a Heron River garage or an upright unit from a rural parcel along the river, the removal itself depends more on a few local details than most people expect.
Freezers hold refrigerant, which puts them in a different category than a couch or a dresser. That one fact drives most of the timing and cost questions below.
Timing: the clean-up weeks don't quite cover it
Star runs two unlimited clean-up weeks a year through Republic Services — one the first full week of April and another the first full week after Christmas. Bulky items and non-Freon appliances go out free during those weeks, which makes them a popular time to clear out a garage or shed.
A freezer isn't a non-Freon appliance, so don't assume it rides along for free just because the cleanup week lines up with your schedule. Outside of those weeks, bulky pickup is available year-round for an additional fee, but it has to be scheduled ahead of time and set out visibly on your regular trash day — Republic Services removes the Freon after pickup, not before.
The Freon fee is where most mistakes happen
The most common mistake with freezer removal in Star is treating it like any other large item — hauling it to the curb, or straight to the transfer station, without accounting for the refrigerant. Both the Ada County Landfill at Hidden Hollow and the Meridian Transfer Station take Freon appliances, but they charge a fee for them specifically, separate from general bulky waste.
A second mistake is loading a freezer loose in an open truck bed. Both disposal sites require every load to be tarped or strapped down, and a freezer that shifts or tips in transit is a hassle you don't need. If the unit is drained and genuinely scrap metal at that point, large metal items move through the Meridian Transfer Station at no charge — worth asking about before you pay the standard fee.
- Freon appliances carry a fee at both the landfill and the transfer station
- Loads must be tarped or strapped, no exceptions
- Curbside bulky pickup needs to be scheduled and set out on trash day
- Clean-up week covers bulky items and non-Freon appliances, not Freon units
- Stripped scrap metal can sometimes move through for free at Meridian
What actually turns up in Star homes
Most of Star's housing is newer — the bulk of it built in the last decade or so inside master-planned subdivisions like Star River Estates, Movado Estates, Skybreak, and Star River Ranch. In those homes, the freezer in question is usually a second unit in the garage, not the kitchen fridge, often left behind by a previous owner or picked up for bulk shopping and later abandoned.
Along the Boise River corridor, there's a different pattern: larger rural-residential lots, some with horses or small hobby setups, where an older chest freezer has been sitting in an outbuilding for years. Either way, the appliance itself is usually still intact enough to handle as a single, tarped load rather than something that needs to be broken down on site.
A freezer isn't hard to get rid of in Star, it's just a different process than a bulky-item pickup, mainly because of the Freon fee and the tarp requirement at drop-off.
