Dishwasher Removal and Haul Away: Appliance Removal in Boise

The new dishwasher is sitting in its box in the garage. The old one is still bolted under the counter, and the store that sold you the new one either wants extra to haul it off or won't touch it at all. That's usually the moment people start looking up appliance removal in Boise.

A lot of our dishwasher removal and haul away calls start exactly like that. So here's what the job looks like from our side.

What dishwasher removal actually involves

From the front, a dishwasher looks simple. It's a box with a door. But it's hooked to three things: a water supply line, a drain hose, and power, which is either a plug under the sink or a wire running straight into a junction box on the unit.

It's also screwed to the underside of the countertop or the cabinet sides with little brackets. That's the part most people forget. You pull, it won't budge, and now you're wondering what you broke.

Then there are the leveling legs. Over the years they get cranked up tight against the counter, and sometimes new flooring got laid right up to the front of the unit. Getting it out without scratching the floor or chipping the counter edge takes some patience.

None of it is hard. It's just fiddly, and you're on your knees in a tight spot with water involved.

The part nobody warns you about

Every dishwasher has water sitting in the bottom and in the drain hose. Disconnect it, tip it, and that water lands on your floor.

We put towels down and keep a shallow pan handy before anything comes loose. Sounds minor until that gray, greasy water runs under a laminate floor.

The other surprise is what's underneath. Once the old unit is out, you're seeing that floor and back wall for the first time in years, and sometimes there's a soft spot from a slow leak.

We'll point it out if we see it. We don't do repairs, so we're not trying to sell you one. But you'll want to know before your installer slides the new one in over it.

Heads up: Before removal day, find the shutoff valve under your kitchen sink and make sure it actually turns. Older valves in North End and Bench homes are often seized. If it won't close, you'll have to shut water off to the whole house, so know where your main is too.

Timing appliance removal in Boise around install day

This is where people get stuck. You don't want a hole in your cabinets for a week. You also don't want the installer showing up to find the old one still sitting there.

What works for most folks is booking the removal for the morning of install day, or the day before. How long a dishwasher pull takes depends on how it's hooked up and how tightly it's wedged in, whether it's hardwired or plugged in, and how easy the path out of the kitchen is.

Same-day service is sometimes possible, depending on where the crew is. It doesn't always line up, but it's worth asking.

Redoing more of the kitchen? Then it usually makes sense to do it all at once. Pulling a dishwasher, a range and an over-the-range microwave in one visit beats three separate trips, and since we price by the space and work involved, the estimate just reflects what's actually there.

Should you just pull the dishwasher yourself?

Honestly, plenty of people can. If you're comfortable shutting off water and power, you've got decent tools, and someone can help you carry it, go for it.

Where it goes sideways is the hardwired ones. If the unit runs straight into a junction box and you're not sure which breaker feeds it, slow down. Same with compression fittings that haven't been touched in years. Crank on one wrong and now you've got a leak at the valve.

Then you still have to get rid of it. It won't fit in the trash can, and a run to the Ada County landfill means wrestling a heavy, wet, awkward box into your own vehicle and paying at the scale. For a lot of people in Nampa or Caldwell, that's a good chunk of a Saturday gone for one appliance.

If you've got the skills and the time, doing it yourself is a fair call.

Where it ends up after appliance removal in Boise

A working dishwasher that's only a few years old can often be donated. Somebody fixing up a rental in Garden City will be glad to have it.

Most older ones get recycled. They're mostly steel and wiring with some plastic, and the metal is worth recovering, so we keep what we pull out of Treasure Valley kitchens out of the landfill whenever there's a better place for it.

The bottom line

Dishwasher removal isn't complicated, but it's wet, cramped and easy to rush. Shut off the water, find the brackets, protect the floor, and plan the removal around install day so your kitchen isn't torn up longer than it needs to be.
